sir,
I have the honour to inform you that the
Canton-Kowloon Railway was opened for through traffic on the 4th. instant. I enclose a newspaper account of the opening ceremony which took place in Chinese Territory at Sham Chun. The hosts were the Authorities of the Imperial Chinese Section; and, as His Excellency the Governor-General of the Liang Kuang Provinces was unable to attend personally, I did not think it proper to be present myself in person, but deputed the Colonial Secretary to take my place. However, on the evening of the day on which the Railway was opened, I entertained the representatives of the Governor-General as well as the Engineers of both Sections of the Railway at dinner in Hong- -kong and I enclose a report of the remarks which I then took
occasion to make.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient,
humble servant,
HE RIGHT HONOURABLE
LEWIS HARCOURT, M.P.,
